A five star review in Herald today

Special Nothing; at Aurora Nova at St Stephen's until Aug 28 (except Tues 22).

Special Nothing is quite simply a fabulous blast. A blast from the talismanic past, too, with Anton Skrzypiciel nesting his head inside Andy Warhol's freak wig and inside his restless, scatter-gun thoughts and behavioural tics. The title refers to the TV show that Warhol always wanted to make, but didn't. A show where those who were famous for nothing, beyond being famous, would roll up to be interviewed, even though they had nothing to say worth listening to.As a concept, it's chilling in its prescience and would, no doubt, find a niche on the screen today. It's also the inspired springboard for a fascinating window into creative processes and what constitutes "art". Writer/director Joao Garcia Miguel pays genuine homage to Warhol, and his observational insights, by having Skrzypiciel first appear as a performer in search of a show. And, since he can never come up with any ideas of his own, why not try inhabiting the personna of some-one who made his own public life a performance? Wig on, and Skrzypiciel erupts into full wah-wah, blah-blah mode. The anecdotes flow, the manipulative temper reaches shrieking pitch – Miguel Borges's patient heightens the comedy with his deadpan efficiency – and what emerges is a sense of someone trapped, bored even, by his own projected image. Meanwhile a back wall of white boxes shows projected images – of us, of Warhol's work – in what builds into a stunning visual installation. Special Nothing – outstanding in every way.
